Collision Photography Exhibition

Biography
"I was born in Kaohsiung, Taiwan in 1992. After graduating from high school, I began specializing in hairdressing. In 2011, I moved to Shanghai for work and became a lecturer at the Shanghai VS Sassoon Hair Academy. During this period, I started exploring photography in my spare time. Due to frequent interactions with diverse people through teaching, my photographic works primarily focus on human subjects.
Moreover, through photography, I ventured into countless potentially forgotten corners of Shanghai, documenting the city’s transformations and fluctuations over the past decade, and capturing the authentic life behind its glamorous international façade."

Collisions
"When you interact with people, events, and objects around you, in some way, you create a connection—just like brushing past someone on the street. These photographs represent the traces left from my collisions with this city."
- Weichen Hsu

City
"What is a city, really? When I realized that people are its fundamental element, my lens began diving into crowds. It’s not the monotonous, bee-like commercial districts, but the chaotic old city areas that, to me, truly express a city’s unique personality. This collection reflects my encounters with the city, its people, and its fleeting moments—an evolving narrative that intertwines personal introspection with the rhythms of urban life."
- Weichen Hsu

Provocation
"At that time, I held a skeptical and dismissive attitude towards social environments and systems, unconsciously observing everything through a sharp, critical lens. These works from this phase can be seen as products meant to provoke and record my surrounding environment."
- Weichen Hsu

Narrow Spaces
"A broken aperture on my camera once resulted in a serendipitous effect: a spotlight-like focus that compressed scenes into elongated compositions. Subjects appeared constrained within narrow frames, charged with tension as if ready to break free, creating an almost palpable visual dynamism."
- Weichen Hsu

Under the Umbrella
"Beneath the umbrella lies a hidden world where reality and illusion merge. This subtle shield reveals truths otherwise unseen. By observing from low or unconventional angles, I captured fleeting moments of light and shadow, transforming the mundane into the extraordinary and uncovering overlooked narratives."
- Weichen Hsu

The Long Lens
"In 2022–2023, I began working with a telephoto lens to explore intricate details. Its ability to bring distant elements into sharp focus allowed me to magnify the unseen. Reflections on water and glass became key motifs, distorting the visual field and blending abstraction with reality. These works deconstruct traditional perspectives, offering a fresh and dynamic sensory experience."

Pandemic
"In 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic struck unexpectedly. China immediately implemented strict lock-down policies. Information from beyond our borders seemed isolated, disconnected from our daily lives. The world became distant and unfamiliar, with everything surrounding us filled with uncertainty. Facing this unprecedented crisis, social anxiety and unease rapidly spread. Fear lingered like an invisible shadow in people’s hearts. I sensed this omnipresent pressure and began exploring the roots of this fear, attempting to understand its origins and how it influences individual inner worlds and behaviors."
